Our Lady of Hope Macarena
The venerated image of Nuestra Señora de la Esperanza Macarena (Our Lady of Hope, Macarena) is an anonymous sculpture that has been attributed to several different artists. What does seem to be beyond doubt is that it was made in the 17th century. In March, 1881, it was restored by Emilio Pizarro y Cruz.
The process involved “repairing the Virgin’s body, making Her mannequin, arms and eyelashes, repairing the tears on Her cheeks and restoring some of the damaged parts of Her face”.
In March 1884 the image of La Santísima Virgen de la Esperanza was restored again, and new eyelashes were added. In 1978, Francisco Arquillo Torres completely restored the whole image.
